Chefchaouen: the complete guide beyond the photos

Chefchaouen owes its worldwide fame to its blue-washed lanes, now one of the most shared photo subjects in Morocco. But reducing the blue city to a backdrop would mean missing the point: perched in the Rif mountains, Chefchaouen also offers hiking, genuine craftsmanship, and an atmosphere found nowhere else in the country.

The blue medina, best explored without a plan

The best advice for Chefchaouen: don’t try to see everything methodically. Let yourself wander the maze of blue-painted lanes and stairways, starting from Uta el-Hammam Square, the large central square lined with cafés and overlooked by the 15th-century Kasbah. Then climb to the Spanish Mosque on a hill above town: it’s the best viewpoint over the medina, especially at sunset.

Hiking around the town

Chefchaouen is an excellent hiking base. The Akchour Waterfalls, reached by a walk along the river, rank among the most beautiful in the Rif. Talassemtane National Park, with its fir forests, extends the nature immersion further. Closer to the centre, Ras El Maa, an urban waterfall at the entrance of the medina, remains a place of daily life where locals come to cool off.

Local crafts and cuisine

The region is known for its textile crafts: Berber rugs, hand-woven wool clothing, locally worked leather goods. Take the time to talk with the artisans rather than buying in a rush. On the food side, Rif mountain cooking stands out with local goat cheese, honey and slow-cooked regional dishes.

How long should you stay?

3 to 4 days let you combine exploring the medina, one or two hikes, and simply enjoying the atmosphere — one of Chefchaouen’s main draws. The best time to visit is April-June or September-October, when temperatures stay pleasant for walking.
