Dakhla: complete guide to kitesurfing, lagoon and desert

At the southern tip of the Kingdom, Dakhla is unlike any other Moroccan destination. Here, the desert meets the ocean, a turquoise lagoon stretches for kilometres, and the wind blows with a steadiness that has made the city one of the best kite and windsurf spots in the world.

The lagoon, Dakhla’s heart

Sheltered by a long sandy peninsula, the Dakhla lagoon offers calm, shallow water, ideal for learning kitesurfing and windsurfing. Point Dakhla is the best-known spot, prized by advanced riders for its constant wind. For beginners, several schools offer lessons right on the lagoon shore.

Desert and white dunes

Minutes from town, the landscape shifts abruptly into desert. The White Dune, which plunges straight into the lagoon, is one of Morocco’s most spectacular photo spots, especially at sunrise and sunset. An excursion by quad or 4x4 into the Aftissat desert extends the immersion in this silent, mineral landscape.

Wildlife and local flavours

The lagoon shores host migratory birds, including colonies of pink flamingos that can be observed quietly from certain points along the bay. On the food side, Dakhla is renowned throughout Morocco for its oysters, farmed in the bay’s oyster beds and enjoyed fresh facing the water.

A destination to disconnect

Far from the bustle of the great imperial cities, Dakhla has developed a range of lagoon-side camps and lodges, designed as much for disconnecting as for sport. It’s a destination lived at a slower pace, between kite sessions and long evenings watching the sun set over the bay.

When to go and how long to stay?

The wind blows most steadily between April and September, the high season for kite and windsurf. From November to March, the climate stays mild and pleasant even without water sports. Allow 5 days to enjoy the lagoon, the desert, and the slower rhythm that defines Dakhla.
