Tangier: the complete guide between two seas and two continents

Separated from Europe by only 14 km, Tangier holds a unique position in the world: the meeting point of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, between Africa and Spain. This geography has shaped a cosmopolitan city, long a haven for writers and artists, that still keeps a singular charm today.

The Kasbah and the medina

The Kasbah and Dar el Makhzen, the old citadel overlooking the city, house a museum tracing Moroccan history and arts inside the former sultan’s palace. The medina of Tangier, a lively maze of white lanes overlooking the port, mixes traditional shops and historic cafés. Petit Socco, an intimate square in the heart of the medina, was a haunt of writers and artists in the last century — the spirit of the place still lingers.

Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

About twenty minutes from the centre, Cape Spartel marks the north-westernmost point of Africa, where the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea visually meet in a spectacular panorama. Right next door, the Caves of Hercules are mythical sea caves, one of whose openings is said to trace the silhouette of the African continent.

Cosmopolitan history

The American Legation Museum, the first American public property abroad, traces the historic ties between Morocco and the United States — a lesser-known but fascinating spot. The Grand Socco, a large lively square between the medina and the new town, remains the hub of Tangier life, while the Terrasse des Paresseux offers one of the finest views over the port and the Strait of Gibraltar.

Modern seafront and a side trip to Spain

Tanja Marina Bay, the city’s new seafront, offers a modern marina, restaurants and a waterside promenade. Another Tangier specialty: ferries link the city to Tarifa and Algeciras in just over an hour, an easy day trip to Spain.

How long to stay?

2 to 3 days let you discover the Kasbah, Cape Spartel and the seafront without rushing. Tangier pairs well with Asilah, less than an hour away, or with Chefchaouen for a northern Morocco itinerary.
