Marrakech in 3 days: complete itinerary for a first visit

Marrakech is often travellers’ first contact with Morocco — and one of the country’s most experience-dense cities. Three days are enough for a solid first impression, provided you balance heritage, gardens and medina life.

Day 1: the historic medina

Devote the first day to the city’s heritage core. Start at Jemaa el-Fna Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where performances and activity run from morning to night. Continue with Bahia Palace, a masterpiece of Moroccan architecture famed for its courtyards and zellij, then the Koutoubia, whose minaret dominates the city skyline. Finish with the Saadian Tombs, a superbly decorated royal necropolis.

Day 2: gardens and breathing space

After a dense first day, treat yourself to a calmer interlude. The Majorelle Garden, with its intense blues and exotic plants, remains the city’s most photographed garden — go early to beat the crowds. The Menara Gardens, a vast olive grove with a basin and pavilion, offer a quieter setting facing the Atlas peaks. For a more intimate experience, Le Jardin Secret, in the heart of the medina, showcases two refined botanical gardens inside a restored palace.

Day 3: souks, shopping and a signature experience

The last day is well suited to the medina souks, a lively, colourful world of Moroccan crafts, materials, scents and non-stop energy. For a contemporary contrast, M Avenue offers shopping and dining in a modern setting. Budget and time permitting, a sunrise hot-air balloon flight offers an unforgettable view over the city and the Atlas peaks — book the day before.

Practical tip: where to stay

Sleeping in a riad in the heart of the medina lets you experience the city’s rhythm from early morning, before the day’s visitors arrive. For more quiet in the evening, the more modern Hivernage or Guéliz districts offer a restful alternative just minutes from the medina.

Extending your stay

Three days cover the essentials, but Marrakech easily supports a longer stay: we recommend 6 to 7 days to combine the city with excursions into the Atlas, the Ourika valley, or even a side trip to Essaouira. All practical information is on our complete Marrakech guide.
